Universal Periodic Review
Freedom of Religion or Belief

The European Baptist Federation’s (EBF) Commission on Freedom and Justice has the task of engaging Baptist churches and Unions around the issue of freedom of religion or belief. One way in which they do this is by engaging in the UN Human Rights Council’s Process entitled the Universal Periodic Review (UPR).
In the Universal Periodic Review, the Human Rights Record of each UN-Member state is reviewed every five years. Through this cycle a series of recommendations are produced to improve the human rights situation in the country. The State can either accept or reject recommendations and the accepted recommendations then become legally binding for the country in questions.
Recommendations for the UK from the previous cycle of UPR can be found here.
NGOs and civil society organizations (including churches) are encouraged to submit reports to this review process providing information on the human rights situation of a country. The EBF regularly submits reports on the freedom of religion or belief situation in countries where there are Baptist churches and member Unions.
The United Kingdom is being reviewed in 2022 and we are anticipating submitting a report into this process.  A small group has been looking at potential issues for inclusion such as:

  • Conversion therapy
  • Protect Duty
  • Increase in Islamophobia and Anti-Semitism
  • The Nationality and Borders Bill

If you have any other concerns you feel should be raised, or wish to comment on the topics suggested, please do contact us.
The deadline for comments is 12 February 2022.
